Remove PFAS From Water

Remove PFAS From Water

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are common ingredients found in nonstick pans, waterproof clothing, and many other products that have a slippery coating. It can find its way into water systems and are especially prevalent in areas where there are industrial factories. So how do you remove PFAS from water your water system? Read on to find out.

Why Is PFAS Dangerous?

Why more research is still needed on PFAS, some studies have shown that PFAS may:

  • Increase the risk of cancer
  • Affect the immune system
  • Lower infant birth weights
  • Boost the body cholesterol levels
  • Increase a woman's blood pressure
  • Cause developmental effects in infants
  • Reduce a woman's chance of getting pregnant

How Do PFAS Substances End Up In Our Water System?

PFAS gets into the water supplies in areas where manufacturing plants are using PFAS or disposal sites. Even if the company stopped using the PFAS substances years ago, PFAS would still be found in the water system in that area. In reality, almost all water contains some level of PFAS but may not be harmful to human health.

How To Remove PFAS From Water

It's challenging to remove PFAS from the water system. Ordinary methods like boiling water will not remove PFAS. However, the EPA lists different possible methods to remove PFAS from water.

Powdered Activated Carbon: A Powdered Activated Carbon filtration system mixes the water in your home with powdered carbon, which sticks to the PFAS, enabling their removal.

Granular Activated Carbon: A Granular Activated Carbon filtration system lets water pass through a filter made with grains of carbon. This process is like a Brita filter, but the grains are much smaller.

Ion Exchange Resins: An Ion Exchange Resins filtration system incorporates tiny hydrocarbon beads, known as resins, into the water. They draw the PFAS like magnets and filter the substance out of the water like normal.

Reverse Osmosis and Nanofiltration are other methods used to remove PFAS. It passes water through a membrane with tiny nanometer-sized pores. The PFAS are too large to pass through the pores.

The best way to protect yourself from PFAS and other harmful chemicals is to install a water filtration system in your home. Having a filtration system in your home will clean water and ensure dishwashing, clothes washing, and showering is safe. At USA Filtration Systems, we can help you eliminate PFAS in your home by installing a water filtration system.
